Ashland University senior Drew Windle capped off his collegiate indoor track and field career in style on Saturday (March 14), winning his fifth overall 800-meter run national championship at the NCAA Division II Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Windle won the event by crossing the tape in 1:49.24, breaking the facility record in the process. He has three indoor 800 run national titles and two outdoor 800 D-II championships.
As a team, the AU women tied for third and the Eagle men finished fourth overall. The Ashland women had 37 team points, behind champion Central Missouri (47) and Hillsdale (40), and tied with New Mexico Highlands. The AU men had 36 team points, behind first-place Adams State (45) and tied-for-second-place Findlay and Grand Valley State (40).
In all, the Eagles saw 10 more All-American efforts on Saturday after four on Friday (March 13).
Senior Elijha Owens earned a pair of All-American honors on Saturday, finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles (7.84) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (47.85).
Ashland had four athletes turn in All-American efforts in one event – the women's shot put. Junior Jamie Sindelar was second (51-feet-3¾), sophomore Megan Tomei placed third (50-feet-1¾), senior Shatora Lewis was sixth (47-feet-10½) and senior Jessica Bridenthal took seventh (47-feet-7).
Senior Jennifer Foster finished in a tie for second in the women's high jump with a top effort of 5-feet-9¼, and freshman Elijah Talk took third place in the men's shot put with a top mark of 56-feet-10¾.
Finally, freshman Irene Skinner earned her first All-American citation, placing eighth in the 400-meter dash (57.13).
