Mattar, Sindelar Earn 2014-15 Winter GLIAC Commissioner's Awards

A pair of standout Ashland University student athletes, Hannah Mattar and Jamie Sindelar, have earned 2014-15 Winter Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner's Awards, the conference announced on Thursday (April 9).

Mattar had a stellar 2014-15 swimming season for the Eagles, earning NCAA Division II All-American citations in the 200-meter breaststroke (fourth place), 400-meter individual medley (fifth) and 200 IM (sixth). She also finished ninth in the 200-meter butterfly at nationals.

As the AU women's swimming team's only representative nationals, the Eagles finished in a tie for 21st place. Also, Mattar's efforts earned the AU athletic program 52.5 points in the Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.

During the GLIAC season, Mattar won three conference titles in the 200 breaststroke, 200 IM and 400 IM, finished second in the 200 butterfly and set a new conference record in the 200 IM (2:02.55). She was named GLIAC Women's Swimmer of the Year.

Mattar, a Hospitality Management major who sports a 3.98 grade point average, is a two-time member of the GLIAC Women's Swimming & Diving All-Academic Excellence Team.

Sindelar had a strong 2014-15 indoor track and field season, and made some history along the way. Her top shot put mark of 55-feet-4¼ not only won a GLIAC championship, it also was the second-best Division II indoor shot put mark in history.

She also was a key member of an Eagle women's indoor squad which not only finished in a tie for third place at the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, but also earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the country during the course of the season.

Sindelar finished second at nationals in the shot put, and earned honors such as U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year, USTFCCCA All-Midwest Region in indoor shot put and GLIAC indoor Women's Field Athlete of the Year.

Sindelar, a Toxicology major with a 3.61 GPA, is a three-time member of the GLIAC Women's Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Excellence Team and a two-time member of the GLIAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Excellence Team.

The GLIAC Commissioner's Awards, sponsored by Meijer, Incorporated, are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.
