At the star-studded 2015 Ashland Summer Series on Thursday (June 4) at the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex, Ashland University Strength & Conditioning Coach A.G. Kruger launched a season-best hammer throw that might have needed a telescope to follow.
Kruger, a three-time United States Olympian in the hammer who is training for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, posted a top distance of 76.87 meters (252-feet-2) on his third of six attempts on Thursday. That mark not only won the event, but it was a mark that very well could send Kruger to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships, Aug. 22-30 in Beijing, China.
"I've been waiting for this throw to come all summer," Kruger said. "I've been very consistent and been able to let it happen. I didn't do anything different, it just went. I just relaxed and let it happen."
Kruger's top toss beat the entry standard for the worlds (76.00m) by nearly a full meter. He is the only United States athlete who has hit the qualifying standard.
Kruger will compete again in the hammer throw today at approximately 5 p.m. at the second day of the Summer Series. He then will compete in the USA Track & Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships, June 26-28 in Eugene, Ore.
