Eagles Add Auto, Improve On Three Provisionals At OSU

For Ashland University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams on Friday (Feb. 19) night at Ohio State, it was quality over quantity.

A select group of Eagles competed at the OSU Tune-Up, and picked up a new automatic mark and improved on three provisional showings for the 2016 NCAA Division II indoor national championships, March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kan.

In the women's shot put, junior Megan Tomei finished second with a top mark of 16.00 meters on her sixth and final attempt, giving her automatic nationals qualification in the event. It was 1.09 meters better than Tomei's previous season-best distance.

Sophomore Clayton Jury took second in the men's weight throw at 19.83 meters, besting his previous 2015-16 top mark by 1.32 meters and moving up the provisional list.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of senior Abby Strock, junior Tiarra Kick, senior Lauren Ellsworth and sophomore Irene Skinner took third place in 3:50.56, moving up the provisional ladder. And, in the men's shot put, junior Zachary Smelcer improved his previous provisional mark to 16.33 meters.

Both AU teams will compete on Saturday (Feb. 20) at the Kent State Tune-Up.
