There was gold on the minds of members of Ashland University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams on Day 1 of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday (Feb. 27) at Tiffin.
There still is a look ahead to the NCAA Division II Championships, March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kan., as well.
Both factors played into the Eagles' Day 1, as they collected one conference title, as well as one new automatic, one new provisional and three improved provisional marks for nationals.
Junior Megan Tomei earned a GLIAC championship in the women's weight throw (19.73 meters), and a new automatic qualifying berth in the process.
In the women's pentathlon, sophomores Hannah Bartlome (3,516 points) and Marie Hammer (3,464) finished 2-3, and both improved on previous provisional efforts.
The men's 60-meter dash preliminaries had senior Eric Thompkins place second with an improved provisional time of 6.80 seconds, and freshman Brandon Wilson was sixth with a new provisional time of 6.86.
Wilson also won the men's 200 prelims in 22.42.
In the men's weight throw, junior Jordan Crayon was second (20.46 meters), while junior Bryn Campbell took third (20.12).
The Eagle men and women will compete in the second and final day of the GLIAC Championships on Sunday (Feb. 28).
