Crayon Wins National Title In Indoor Weight Throw

On the first day of the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor Track And Field Championships, Ashland University junior Jordan Crayon earned a national championship in the men's weight throw.

Crayon's top effort of 21.81 meters/71-feet-6 3/4 was 22/100ths of a meter better than Central Missouri senior Caniggia Raynor (21.59 meters/70-feet-10).

Crayon adds to Ashland's storied list of men's weight throw national champions, a list that includes Richard Quick (2013), Ryan Loughney (2011-12), Rob Klenk (2008), Kibwe Johnson (2007), Bryan Vickers (2006), Rich Ulm (2000) and Jake Brooks (1999).

Junior Bryn Campbell also turned in a top effort in the weight, placing fourth at 20.60 meters/67-feet-7. Sophomore Clayton Jury was 11th (18.69 meters/61-feet-4), while junior Jason Zahn was 16th (18.17 meters/59-feet-7½).

In the women's high jump, junior Rebecca Koval placed 11th at 1.66 meters/5-feet-5¼. In the women's weight throw, junior Megan Tomei was 14th at 17.34 meters/56-feet-10¾.

In the prelims of the women's 200-meter dash, senior Lauren Ellsworth placed 12th in 24.65 seconds, while in the women's 400 dash prelims, sophomore Irene Skinner was 16th (55.89).

Through Day 1, AU's men are tied for second with 15 team points, three behind Grand Valley State's 18.

Ashland will have three men compete in the shot put on Saturday (March 12) at 1:55 p.m. – Zahn, sophomore Elijah Talk and senior Jared Whitcomb. Senior Jamie Sindelar and Tomei are the 1-2 seeds in the women's shot put on Saturday at 4:35 p.m.
