AU Men, Women Begin Campaign Strong At Tiffin

It didn't take Ashland University's indoor track and field teams long to begin racking up nationals-worthy efforts.

The Eagle men and women, each ranked No. 6 in the country, combined for 12 provisional efforts for the NCAA Division II national championships, March 10-11 in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday (Dec. 3) at the season-opening Tiffin Alumni Open.

Junior Haley Gregory won a pair of events – the women's 60-meter hurdles (8.71 seconds) and 60 dash (7.68) – and earned two provisional marks in the process. Sophomore Samantha Duale won the 60 prelims with a provisional time of 7.71, then was second in the finals in 7.72.

In the jumps, sophomore Myles Pringle won the men's high jump with a provisional mark of 2.06 meters, freshman Paula Wollenslegel took the women's high jump with a prov of 1.65 meters and sophomore Devin Snowden won the men's long jump with a prov of 7.16 meters.

Ashland's men's weight throwers went 1-2-3 and all earned provisional entry – redshirt freshman Alex Hill (first, AU freshman record 20.12 meters), junior Clayton Jury (second, 20.04 meters) and redshirt freshman Nick Zak (third, 17.54 meters). Sophomore Brandon Sicurella was fourth in the shot put with a prov mark of 15.93 meters.

In the women's weight throw, sophomores Natalie Helenthal (second, 18.45 meters) and Mackenzie Leigh (third, 17.72 meters) both earned provisional entry.

Other first-place showings were earned by the men's 4x400 relay team (3:23.78) and the women's 4x4 (4:01.62), sophomore Brandon Wilson in the men's 60 dash (6.91) and 200 dash (22.84), freshman Cassidy Newburg in the women's 400 dash (1:00.57), Duale in the women's 200 dash (25.83), senior Marlecia Holston in the women's long jump (5.49 meters) and senior Nuri Lee in the women's triple jump (11.38 meters).

Placing second in their respective events were freshman Mahlique Booth in the men's long jump (7.06 meters), freshman Gariana Bercheni in the women's 60 hurdles (9.15), Pringle in the men's 60 dash (6.94), senior Tiarra Kick in the women's 400 dash (1:01.50) and senior Brandon Freeman in the men's 200 dash (22.94).

Thirds were collected by senior Sam Birchall in the women's 400 dash (1:02.53), freshman Dayana Banks in the women's 200 dash (26.28) and junior Hannah Bartlome in the women's long jump (5.32 meters).
