The No. 1-ranked Ashland University men's indoor track and field team lived up to its national billing at the GVSU Big Meet on Friday (Feb. 10).
Ashland's men racked up three new program records, five new provisional nationals marks and four improved provisionals on Friday. That effort was led by senior Nick Hall and redshirt freshman Steven Kapes in the men's 3,000-meter run.
Hall finished seventh in the 3,000 in 8:13.08, which not only was a new provisional time, but a new program indoor record. Kapes was 11th in 8:22.18, both a new provisional mark and a new program freshman indoor standard.
In the men's shot put, junior Zachary Smelcer was second with a new provisional distance of 16.02 meters/52-feet-6¾, and redshirt freshman Nick Zak tied for third with his new provisional launch of 15.90 meters/52-feet-2. Zak tied with sophomore Brandon Sicurella, who already had a provisional mark in the event.
In the men's mile, junior Hunter Heaton joined the group of provisional national qualifiers by finishing 10th in 4:11.22.
Improving upon previous provisional showings were sophomore Myles Pringle in a new school-record showing the men's 200 dash (first, 21.39 seconds), the men's 4x4 relay team of senior Columbus Millet, sophomore Devin Snowden, freshman Paul Murray and Pringle (first, 3:12.59); sophomore Stephen Pop in the men's weight throw (third, 17.97 meters/58-feet-11½) and junior Daniel Roberts in the men's shot put (fourth, 17.19 meters/57-feet-4¾).
Roberts won the men's weight throw invite at 22.10 meters/72-feet-6¼, while senior Jordan Crayon was third at 20.74 meters/68-feet-0½. In the men's shot put invite, seniors Jason Zahn (17.44 meters/57-feet-2¾) and Elijah Talk (17.27 meters/56-feet-8) finished first and third, respectively.
For the 14th-ranked Eagle women, senior Megan Tomei was second in the weight throw (19.28 meters/63-feet-3¼), and senior Rebecca Koval was runner-up in the high jump (1.63 meters/5-feet-4¼).
