It was quite the start to the outdoor season on Friday (March 24) for Ashland University's men's and women's track teams.
At the start of both the Raleigh Relays and Weems Baskin Invitational on Friday, Eagles turned in two automatic and seven provisional qualifying efforts for 2017 NCAA Division II outdoor nationals, May 25-27 in Bradenton, Fla.
A new school record also was set on Friday in North Carolina, as sophomore Myles Pringle picked up where he left off indoors and broke his own AU standard in the men's 400-meter dash (45.99). Pringle automatically heads to nationals thanks to his winning effort in the 400.
Meanwhile, in South Carolina, Eagle men and women hammer throwers turned in mid-season efforts.
On the men's side, junior Daniel Roberts took second with an automatic mark of 67.97 meters/223-feet-0. Five men turned in provisional distances – senior Jordan Crayon (fourth, 64.72 meters/212-feet-4), senior Bryn Campbell (sixth, 60.43 meters/198-feet-3), freshman Alex Hill (seventh, 58.64 meters/192-feet-5), sophomore Stephen Pop (ninth, 55.30 meters/181-feet-5) and freshman Nick Zak (10th, 54.87 meters/180-feet-0).
For the Eagle women, sophomores Mackenzie Leigh (fourth, 56.64 meters/185-feet-10) and Natalie Helenthal (sixth, 54.26 meters/178-feet-0) each turned in provisional marks.
Freshman Dylan Kipp was third in the men's javelin at 53.51 meters/175-feet-6.
Day 1 action wasn't complete at the time of the writing of this press release. That information will be added to the press release on Day 2 of both meets on Saturday (March 25).
