Ashland University's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams began action at the Jesse Owens Track Classic at The Ohio State University on Friday (April 21), and two Eagles certainly made their mark.

In the men's hammer throw, championship division, junior Daniel Roberts and senior Jordan Crayon finished 1-2. It was their top distances, however, which put them in the all-time NCAA Division II record book.

Roberts' top mark of 68.95 meters/226-feet-2½ makes him the seventh-best D-II hammer thrower of all-time, while Crayon's top distance of 68.75 meters/225-feet-6½ makes him ninth-best all-time. Of the top 10 best D-II hammer throwers in history, half are Eagles – Kibwe Johnson No. 1, Ryan Loughney No. 4, Garrett Grey No. 5, Roberts No. 7 and Crayon No. 9.

Freshman Dylan Kipp earned a new provisional for 2017 outdoor nationals in the men's javelin throw (sixth, 59.22 meters/194-feet-3¼). In the men's hammer, open division, freshmen Alex Hill (first, 59.08 meters/193-feet-9¾) and Nick Zak (second, 58.63 meters/192-feet-4¼) earned improved provisional marks.

In the women's hammer, open division, sophomore Natalie Helenthal took second with a provisional-improving mark of 56.80 meters/186-feet-4.
