Crayon, Kipp Titles Highlight GLIACs Day 2

On Day 2 of the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday (May 4) at Grand Valley State, the No. 1-ranked Ashland University men's outdoor track and field team's hammer throwers turned in a dominant effort.

Senior Jordan Crayon (68.27 meters/223-feet-11¾), junior Daniel Roberts (66.65 meters/218-feet-8) and senior Bryn Campbell (64.21 meters/210-feet-7¾) finished 1-2-3 to give the Eagle men 24 team points. That finish mirrors where Crayon, Roberts and Campbell rank in the hammer in all of NCAA Division II.

Ashland's men received 10 more team points when freshman Dylan Kipp won the men's javelin throw with a top mark of 58.95 meters/193-feet-4¾.

In the last event of the day, freshman Steven Kapes took second in the men's 10,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 31:00.11.

Sophomore Myles Pringle finished third in the men's high jump at 2.00 meters/6-feet-6½, sophomores Devin Snowden (7.00 meters/22-feet-11½) and Jacob Bon (6.89 meters/22-feet-7¼) finished 5-6 in the men's long jump and freshman Jared Ryder was seventh in the men's decathlon (5,551 points).

On the women's side, freshman Amber Otermat took third with a top mark of 3.74 meters/12-feet-3, while sophomore hammer throwers Natalie Helenthal (fourth, 57.43 meters/188-feet-5) and Mackenzie Leigh (seventh, 54.97 meters/180-feet-4) each earned team points.

Junior Hannah Bartlome was fifth in the javelin throw (36.74 meters/120-feet-6¼), and sophomore Tiffany Pryce (heptathlon, 4,216 points) and junior Cortney Haubert (3,000 steeplechase, 11:51.05) were sixth in their respective events. Senior Nuri Lee placed seventh in the long jump at 5.41 meters/17-feet-8¾.

In Thursday's men's 100 dash preliminaries, sophomore Brandon Wilson earned a new provisional nationals time of 10.59 seconds.

The Eagle men are in first place through the first two days of the Championships, posting 55 points. Tiffin is second (44), and Grand Valley State third (40).

Ashland's women have 22 team points and are in fourth place with a day to go. Grand Valley State (33.5) is first, followed by Hillsdale (30) and Findlay (25).
