A feverish couple of hours on Saturday (May 27) night – and a total team effort over three days – led to Ashland University's men's track and field team finishing in a tie for third place at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
The Eagles finished with 50 team points, tied with Tiffin for third. St. Augustine's won the team title with 58 points, followed by Lincoln, Mo., with 52. Ashland's men finished no worse than third at outdoor nationals for the fourth time in the last five years.
Setting the tone for Saturday's action was sophomore Myles Pringle, who won his first D-II outdoor national title in the men's 400-meter dash in a school-record 45.77 seconds. Pringle won the 2017 national title in the men's 400 dash indoors, as well, and is the only Eagle men's athlete to win a national title in the 400, indoors or outdoors.
Ashland University men's outdoor track and field tied for third in the country at the 2017 Division II National Championships, scoring 50 points as a team. The women also scored a point! Pringle's national championship was part of a two-hour stretch on Saturday which was one of the most eventful and impressive in the storied history of Ashland University track and field:
- At 5:20 p.m., the men's 4x100 relay team of sophomores Brandon Wilson and Devin Snowden, senior Brandon Freeman and Pringle finished sixth and earned All-American status with a season-best time of 40.53 seconds. The quartet came into nationals with the 14th-best time in the country.
- Within seconds of each other at around 6:30 p.m., junior Elijah Talk held his national ranking and finished third in the men's shot put at 18.47 meters/60-feet-7¼, then Pringle won his national title in the 400.
- Pringle finished off the men's effort later by, while working around the 400 dash, placing 10th in the men's high jump with a top effort of 2.10 meters/6-feet-10¾.
