Positioning for 2018 NCAA Division II indoor nationals (March 9-10 at Pittsburg State) continued for Ashland University's men's and women's teams on Friday (March 9) at the Grand Valley State Big Meet.

Several Eagle men's and women's throwers turned in improved provisional nationals marks – and the biggest move came from redshirt freshman Gianna DiPippo in the women's weight throw.

DiPippo won Friday's event with a top effort of 18.69 meters/61-feet-4 – a provisional improvement and career-best toss by nine-tenths of a meter. Junior Mackenzie Leigh was right behind DiPippo in second place at 18.61 meters/61-feet-0¾.

Sophomore Nick Zak won the men's shot put with a top effort of 16.75 meters/54-feet-11½, also an improved provisional distance.

The men's weight throw invite saw sophomore Alex Hill improve upon his previous automatic-qualifying nationals mark of 22.10 meters/72-feet-6¼. With that heave, Hill becomes the sixth-best indoor weight thrower in D-II history.

Also in the men's weight throw invite, Zak took third place with another improved provo of 20.40 meters/66-feet-11¼.

In the men's weight throw, junior Jim Toth was the runner-up with a provisional improvement of 18.86 meters/61-feet-10½, while in the men's shot put invite, sophomore Jake Glass also improved with a third-place showing of 17.41 meters/57-feet-1½.

Junior Myles Pringle was second in the men's 200-meter dash invite at 21.58 seconds, while freshman David Amstutz was second in the men's shot put at 16.52 meters/54-feet-2½.

In the men's 4x400 relay, the quartet of senior William Robinson and freshmen Trevor Bassitt, T.J. Elliott and Brenden Archer placed third in 3:17.13. That was a provisional time, and they become Ashland's third different 4x4 combo to provisionally qualify for nationals.

UP NEXT: Saturday (Feb. 10) at noon at the Kent State Qualifier.
