Nationals Marks Abound for Eagle Men, Women At Walsh

Coming into Friday's (April 13) Walsh Invitational, Ashland University's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams combined for one automatic and 16 provisional marks for 2018 NCAA Division II nationals, May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C.

That number was increased on Friday, paced by a pair of showings from junior Myles Pringle, who won both the men's high jump and men's 200-meter dash. Pringle's top mark of 2.09 meters in the high jump is a new provisional mark, while his time of 21.08 seconds in the 200 dash improves upon a previous provisional mark.

In the men's hammer throw, Ashland collected a new provisional and three improved provisionals. Sophomore Alex Hill finished second at 64.35 meters (improved), sophomore Nick Zak was fourth at 58.51 meters (improved), junior Brandon Sicurella was sixth at 55.76 meters (new), and junior Jim Toth was seventh at 55.59 meters (improved).

Toth also picked up a new provisional distance in the men's discus in finishing third (50.01 meters), while, in the men's shot put, freshman David Amstutz finished fifth with a new provisional distance of 16.23 meters.

In the women's hammer throw, junior Natalie Helenthal won with an improved provisional heave of 56.32 meters.

Freshman Madeline Kreller and sophomore Gariana Bercheni tied for first in the women's 200 dash in 24.51 seconds. Also taking titles on Friday were freshman Romi Smith in the women's javelin throw (40.69 meters), sophomore Ellie Jindra in the women's high jump (1.65 meters), freshman Ian Johnson in the men's 1,500 run (4:06.86), and the men's 4x4 relay team of senior William Robinson, freshmen Trevor Bassitt and Travis Moore, and sophomore Brad Studenmund (3:23.52).

Eagles earned numerous runner-up showings – freshman Taylor Dziatczak in the women's javelin throw (39.04 meters), senior Hannah Bartlome in the women's high jump (1.65 meters), Hill in the men's discus throw (51.22 meters), sophomore Kyle D'Ambrosio in the men's long jump (6.36 meters), Moore in the men's 400 hurdles (54.49 seconds), sophomore Amber Otermat in the women's pole vault (2.82 meters), junior Mackenzie Leigh in the women's hammer throw (56.28 meters), and the men's 4x1 relay team of freshmen Channing Phillips, Bassitt, and T.J. Elliott, and Pringle (41.15 seconds).

Ashland third-place finishes were turned in by freshman Jake Hall in the men's 1,500 run (4:11.05), senior Megan Tomei in the women's hammer throw (55.26 meters), freshman Brent Fairbanks in the men's hammer throw (58.94 meters), Bercheni in the women's 100 hurdles (14.62 seconds), sophomore Dylan Kipp in the men's javelin throw (50.86 meters), freshman Sam Shockey in the men's 800 run (1:56.48), senior Elijah Talk in the men's shot put (17.02 meters), junior Emily Schumaker in the women's 5,000 run (18:58.55), and the women's 4x1 relay quartet of junior Samantha Duale, freshman Angel Frye, Bercheni and Kreller (48.52 seconds).

UP NEXT: Ashland's men (ranked No. 17 in the country) and women (No. 25) will compete on April 20-21 at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Track Classic, and April 21 at Baldwin Wallace Sparky Adams Invitational.
