Ashland University's men's and women's track and field teams started the first of two home meets on Friday (April 27) with the hammer-throw portion of the ninth Ashland Alumni Open.
- Freshman Brent Fairbanks took runner-up honors in the men's hammer open with a top effort and improved provisional nationals distance of 59.67 meters, while sophomore Nick Zak was fourth at 58.66 meters. Junior Stephen Pop was sixth at 57.68 meters, good for a new provisional nationals effort.
- In the men's hammer invite section, sophomore Alex Hill finished sixth at 63.07 meters.
- The women's hammer invite saw junior Mackenzie Leigh finish sixth (55.85 meters), junior Natalie Helenthal take seventh (54.77 meters) and senior Megan Tomei end eighth (52.18 meters).
- Redshirt freshman Gianna DiPippo was fifth in the women's hammer open at 50.02 meters.
UP NEXT: The second day of the ninth Ashland Alumni Open, Saturday (April 28) at 10 a.m. at the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex.
