Ashland University freshman thrower Brent Fairbanks stepped on a national stage on Friday (June 15) afternoon, and he represented himself and the Eagle track and field program well.

Throwing a six-kilogram hammer (lighter than in collegiate competition) on Friday at the 2018 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind., Fairbanks took third place in the men's hammer throw with a top effort and juniors PR of 65.93 meters/216-feet-3. The top two finishers in each event at junior nationals advance to the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships, July 10-15 in Tampere, Finland, and Fairbanks trailed the No. 2 hammer thrower by six centimeters/three inches in the final standings.

As a true freshman in 2017-18, Fairbanks qualified for NCAA Division II nationals both indoors in the weight throw and outdoors in the hammer throw. His season-best marks were 59.67 meters/195-feet-9 in the hammer, 34.85 meters/114-feet-4 in the discus throw, and 22.16 meters/72-feet-8½ in the weight.

On Sunday (June 17) at 3 p.m., Ashland redshirt freshman Lindsay Baker will compete in the women's shot put (4 kg) at junior nationals.
