Ashland University assistant track and field coach for sprints and hurdles, Ernie Clark, has been elevated to the program's associate head coach position, Eagle head coach Jud Logan announced on Monday (July 9).

"The first thing that comes to mind when talking about being named the associate head coach is being thankful," Clark said. "I am truly thankful to be part of a track and field program with such a high level of enthusiasm, passion, sense of family, and success. I think there are many programs that have a couple of those characteristics, but there are few that have all of the above.

"So I am certainly thankful to be part of this program, and honored to hold the title of associate head coach."

Said Logan, "Ernie will be starting his fourth year with us, and I just feel like it's time to elevate him and give him a little more responsibility, to assist me in the day-to-day things that go on. The types of recruits that he's bringing in is certainly something that did not go unrecognized by me or the administration."

Clark was named the 2018 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor National Assistant Coach of the Year at the end of May, and is a two-time (2017-18) USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men's Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year. His charges have won five national championships in his tenure at Ashland - Myles Pringle four times in the men's 400-meter dash, and the outdoor 4x400 relay team of Pringle and three freshmen - Trevor Bassitt, T.J. Elliott and Channing Phillips - this past spring.

"This only exists because of the trust, belief and work of both my athletes and head coach Jud Logan," Clark said. "I have been able to assist the progress of the program with our staff because of the people around me and the group I work with. They've all been incredible, and I look forward to putting in even more work with them to accomplish even more."

Said Logan, "Beyond the throws, prior to Ernie being here, with Dave Smalley, my thought process was the same, that that was the next viable option for us scoring points nationally, was through the relays and through the sprints and the hurdles.

"Ernie has taken that, very similar to the way Dave did, and made that kind of the crown jewel of our program, to go with the jewel that's always been here, and that's the strength of the throws program."
