The 2018 NCAA Division II national runner-up Ashland University men's outdoor track and field team will be recognized at halftime of the Eagle men's basketball game on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. vs. Lake Superior State at Kates Gymnasium.
Ashland's eight nationals competitors – Myles Pringle, Channing Phillips, Trevor Bassitt, T.J. Elliott, Alex Hill, Elijah Talk, Nick Zak and Brent Fairbanks – will be honored, along with head coach Jud Logan, associate head coach Ernie Clark, assistant coach Abby Majesky and director of track and field operations Jacob Sussman.
AU President Dr. Carlos Campo and Director of Athletics Al King will make the presentations.
"We do watches for third and fourth, and rings for first and second," said Logan, who had two national champions, one second-place, two third-place and two fourth-place showings at 2018 outdoor nationals. The national champs were Pringle in the 400-meter dash, and the 4x400 relay team of Phillips, Bassitt, Elliott and Pringle.
For Logan, the accomplishment of a national runner-up placement with just eight athletes competing ranks up there with what the "Silver Seven" women did in placing in a tie for second nationally at 2010 indoor nationals.
"A lot of things that happened that year, Kelly Ash won the shot put, Abby won the high jump, Steph Tinney won the 400, so we had three national champions," Logan noted. "Then we built some points behind there with Kelly Ash (fifth) in the weight throw, and Tara Cooper (second) in the weight throw, so we built some more stuff in.
"Last year, obviously, we were piggy-backing on Myles. That second-place finish in the high jump is crucial."
