Three Ashland University indoor track and field athletes have garnered Week 1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.

Redshirt freshman Lindsay Baker is the Women's Field Athlete of the Week, junior Gariana Bercheni is the Women's Track Athlete of the Week, and senior Jim Toth is the Men's Field Athlete of the Week, following their efforts on Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Tiffin Alumni Open.

In her first varsity collegiate event, Baker broke the AU women's indoor freshman record in the shot put at 16.73 meters/54-feet-10¾, which automatically qualifies her for 2019 NCAA Division II indoor nationals, March 8-9 at Pittsburg State (Kan.), and is the best distance in D-II through one week of action. Baker also went 17.52 meters/57-feet-5¾ in the weight throw, provisionally qualifying for nationals.

Bercheni won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.98 seconds, and was second in the 60 dash in 7.73 seconds at Tiffin. She ranks No. 8 in Division II in the 60 hurdles, and No. 9 in the 60 dash.

Toth took second in the weight throw at Tiffin, with a top mark of 19.79 meters/64-feet-11¼. That distance is good for a provisional nationals entry, as well as the No. 3 throw in the country.

For Bercheni, this is her second GLIAC weekly award. For Baker and Toth, it is their first each.

Ashland's men and women will finish first-semester action on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 7-8) at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.
