The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) computers really like what Ashland University's men's indoor track and field team has done so far in 2018-19.
In the first USTFCCCA regular-season NCAA Division II computer rankings, released on Tuesday (Jan. 22) afternoon, the Eagle men move into the No. 1 spot in the country with 177.86 points – well ahead of No. 2 Adams State (156.67) and No. 3 Tiffin (125.92). This is the first time the AU men have been the top team in the nation indoors since March 6, 2017.
Individually, four Ashland men have scored at least 20 computer points in one event – senior Myles Pringle in both the 400-meter dash (24.22) and high jump (21.34), sophomore Trevor Bassitt in the 60 hurdles (23.03), and sophomore Brent Fairbanks (25.14) and junior Alex Hill (22.11) in the weight throw. Those five scores alone would give Ashland's men more points than all but two other D-II squads.
Ashland's women's team is No. 8 in Division II in the first regular-season poll, moving down one spot from the preseason national rankings. The Eagle women are in the top 10 in the nation in consecutive rankings indoors for the first time since Weeks 6 and 7 of 2014-15.
The two top computer point earners for the AU women are freshman Lindsay Baker in the shot put (24.79) and senior Natalie Helenthal in the weight throw (20.72).
The end of January will see the Eagle men and women going two different places on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 25-26) – the Penn Nationals and the Findlay Alumni Classic.
