Ashland University's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams have begun action at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., and the No. 7-ranked men and the No. 12-ranked women have seen three athletes improve upon their previous provisional nationals marks.

On Friday (April 12), sophomore Trevor Bassitt won the men's 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 51.94 seconds for not only an improved provisional time for 2019 NCAA Division II outdoor nationals (May 23-25 in Kingsville, Texas), but a new outdoor personal record, as well.

Earlier in the day, Bassitt was fourth in the men's 110 hurdles in 13.88 seconds, which by itself would be an automatic nationals qualification, but being too wind-aided, it won't be an eligible time. Bassitt, however, started the day as being tied for the sixth-best men's 110 hurdler in D-II.

Junior Ellie Jindra moved herself one step closer to an automatic nationals distance in the women's high jump on Friday, placing fifth with a top effort of 1.73 meters/5-feet-8.

On Thursday (April 11) in Tennessee, senior Jim Toth improved upon his previous provisional distance in the men's hammer throw, moving to a PR of 59.97 meters/196-feet-9.

Ashland's men and women will be at three meets on Saturday (April 13) – the Tennessee Relays, the Walsh Invitational and the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.
