After quite a haul of first-place finishes on the third and final day of the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Friday (May 3) at Grand Valley State, Ashland University's men's and women's track and field teams each finished second in the final standings.
On the men's side, the Eagles had 214 team points, trailing only the host Lakers (263). Northwood finished third with 102 points.
Ashland's men earned nine conference titles on Friday, led by senior Myles Pringle, who set a new stadium record with an improved nationals automatic mark in the men's 400-meter dash (45.54 seconds), improved upon his provisional time in the men's 200 dash (20.90 seconds), and was part of the men's 4x400 relay team, along with freshman Tim Rumas and sophomores Trevor Bassitt and Channing Phillips, which set a new conference mark with a new provo of 3:08.42.
Bassitt also had a memorable day in Allendale, Mich., winning the men's 400 hurdles with an improved provisional time of 51.45 seconds, taking the men's 110 hurdles in 14.03 seconds, and winning the men's 400 relay with a new provo time of 41.03 seconds, along with Rumas, Phillips and sophomore Kainnan Ramsey.
Ashland's men also saw GLIAC-title performances from sophomore Jared Ryder in the triple jump (14.54 meters/47-feet-8½), junior Jake Glass in the men's shot put (17.35 meters/56-feet-11¼), and freshman Adam Keller in the pole vault (4.67 meters/15-feet-3¾).
Finishing second in their respective events were Phillips in the men's 400 dash (new provo, 47.14 seconds) and junior Alex Hill in the men's discus throw (51.77 meters/169-feet-10), while Kyle D'Ambrosio (triple jump, 14.01 meters/45-feet-11¾) and Bassitt (100 dash, new provo, 10.58 seconds) each took third.
Placing fourth were freshman Ethan Tabor in the men's triple jump (13.55 meters/44-feet-5½), Phillips in the men's 200 dash (21.38 seconds), and senior Jim Toth in the men's discus throw (49.28 meters/161-feet-8).
Earning fifth-place points were Tabor in the men's 400 hurdles (54.93 seconds), freshman Keshun Jones in the men's 200 dash (21.81 seconds), junior Nick Zak in the men's shot put (16.28 meters/53-feet-5), and Ramsey in the men's 100 dash (10.79 seconds).
Rounding out the AU men's point-scorers on Friday were sophomore David Amstutz in the shot put (sixth, new provo, 16.16 meters/53-feet-0¼), Zak in the discus throw (seventh, 46.96 meters/154-feet-1), and junior Paul Murray in the 800 run (eighth, 1:55.82).
The Eagle women ended the Championships with 140 team points. Grand Valley State won with 282 points, and Northern Michigan was third with 118.
Redshirt freshman Lindsay Baker earned a league championship in the women's shot put (15.57 meters/51-feet-1), and junior Ellie Jindra did the same in the women's high jump (1.69 meters/5-feet-6½). Sophomore Gianna DiPippo was the runner-up in the women's shot put (new provo, 14.08 meters/46-feet-2½).
Taking thirds were sophomore Miyuki Sugiyama in the women's triple jump (11.44 meters/37-feet-6½), senior Samantha Duale in the women's 100 dash (12.02 seconds) and Baker in the women's discus throw (46.84 meters/153-feet-8). Fourth-place showings were earned by Sugiyama and junior Paula Wollenslegel in the women's high jump (tied, 1.60 meters/5-feet-3), and the women's 4x100 relay team of Duale, freshman Cheyanne Davis, redshirt freshman Rachel Miller and junior Gariana Bercheni (48.03 seconds).
Davis was fifth in the women's 400 dash in 58.12 seconds, freshman Destini Oler took fifth in the women's 800 run in 2:13.60, and the women's 4x400 relay quartet of Davis, Oler, freshman Yosola Olujide-Ajibade and senior Tiffany Pryce was fifth in 3:57.99.
Sixth-place finishes were earned by Bercheni in the women's 100 dash (12.14 seconds) and 100 hurdles (14.70 seconds), Duale in the women's 200 dash (24.89 seconds) and freshman Abby Moser in the women's 5,000 run (18:04.87).
The remainder of AU's women's team points were earned by redshirt freshman Elizabeth Weimer in the shot put (seventh, 13.11 meters/43-feet-0¼), sophomore Romi Smith in the triple jump (seventh, 10.23 meters/33-feet-6¾), redshirt freshman Makayla Pop in the discus throw (seventh, 42.10 meters/138-feet-1), Bercheni in the 200 dash (seventh, 24.95 seconds), freshman Grace King in the triple jump (eighth, 9.94 meters/32-feet-7½), Wollenslegel in the 100 hurdles (eighth, 15.65 seconds), and Miller in the 400 hurdles (1:07.24).
Following the conclusion of the meet, Bassitt (Track Athlete of the Meet and High Point Athlete of the Meet) and Hill (Field Athlete of the Meet and Field Athlete of the Year) each garnered two conference awards on the men's side, and Baker (Freshman Field Athlete of the Meet and Field Athlete of the Year) did the same on the women's side.
