Bassitt Earns Nationals Auto At YSU Opener

If Trevor Bassitt wanted to get qualifying for 2020 NCAA Division II indoor track nationals out of the way early, he succeeded on Friday (Dec. 6) at Youngstown State.

Bassitt, a junior, automatically qualified for nationals (March 13-14 in Birmingham, Ala.) in the men's 400-meter dash on Friday, and provisionally qualified in the men's 60 hurdles. Bassitt was second in the 400 in 46.88 seconds, and third in the 60 hurdles in 7.96.

Two provisional marks were earned in a 1-2 finish in the women's high jump, as senior Ellie Jindra won at 1.73 meters/5-feet-8, and sophomore Miyuki Sugiyama took second at 1.70 meters/5-feet-7. Sophomore Maddi Yingst earned a provisional time in the women's 400 dash in 56.28 seconds.

In the men's high jump, sophomore Storm Elsesser landed a provisional distance in finishing fourth at 2.04 meters/6-feet-8¼.

Junior Sam Shockey was second in the men's mile (4:25.98) and freshman Travis Marx was runner-up in the men's 200 dash (21.75 seconds), while junior Danny Friebel was third in the men's mile (4:26.58) and senior Gariana Bercheni was third in the women's 60 hurdles (8.89 seconds).

Another provisional mark was earned at Saginaw Valley State's Holiday Open, as senior Paula Wollenslegel had a high jump of 1.67 meters/5-feet-5 3/4 during the pentathlon.

The first weekend of 2019-20 action will continue on Saturday (Dec. 7), as Ashland's throwers go to Findlay's Oiler Opener, and the Eagle multi athletes continue at Saginaw Valley State.
