Ashland University women's basketball player Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) has been named the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America of the Year.
This award is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Daugherty, who was a senior in 2012-13, is the first AU student-athlete to receive this award. She was one of 12 finalists.
Earlier this year, Daugherty was named a Capital One First Team Academic All-American and the Capital One Women's Basketball Academic All-American of the Year.
"Wow – what an honor it is to receive an award this," said Daugherty. "In Division II, I know how so many athletes take pride in their athletic and academic success. To be honored with an award like this is special and meaningful. I know how hard people work to be successful academically and athletically."
Ashland is the only school in the country to have two student-athletes be honored as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for their sport (see list at end of release). In addition to Daugherty, Julie Widmann (Littleton, Col./Heritage) was named the Women's At-Large Academic All-America of the Year. Widmann was a member of the AU swimming and diving team.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects of the 2012-13 Division II Academic All-America teams program.
Daugherty played two years at AU after transferring from Dayton. She led the Eagles to the NCAA Division II title game both years and in 2013, the Eagles won the national championship. This past season she averaged 22.3 ppg., 13.7 rpg., and shot 52.2 percent from the floor. Daugherty was named the most outstanding player at the Elite Eight in San Antonio. With Daugherty in an AU uniform, the Eagles were 70-3. Daugherty never lost to a GLIAC opponent.
In 2012-13, the guard-forward was the third-leading scorer in Division II and the second-leading rebounder. She led the nation in double-doubles (25) and holds the NCAA Division II record for consecutive double-doubles (34).
Daugherty is a two-time WBCA national player of the year and is a two-time first team All-American. She is a two-time GLIAC player of the year, two-time Midwest Region player of the year and was the outstanding player of the GLIAC Tournament and Midwest Region Tournament twice. Daugherty was the Division II Bulletin's player of the year in 2012-13. In her career, Daugherty played in 12 NCAA Division II postseason games. She never failed to record a double-double.
In the 2013 national title game against Dowling, Daugherty had 26 points and 12 rebounds.
As a junior, Daugherty averaged 21.3 ppg., and 14.1 rpg. She led the country in rebounding. AU reached the national title game against Shaw in 2011-12 and lost in overtime. In that tournament, Daugherty established NCAA Tournament marks for rebounds (95) and field goals made (56).
Daugherty is a two-time recipient of the Division II Honda Sports Award. She is the first Division II student-athlete to win the award in consecutive years.
A middle childhood education major, Daugherty graduated with a 3.97 grade point average. Earlier this week she was honored as the GLIAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
