As announced by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Thursday (Oct. 26) morning, Ashland University's women's basketball team has been selected to win the 2017-18 GLIAC South Division by league head coaches, and senior forwards Laina Snyder and Andi Daugherty each received preseason honors.

In the 2017 GLIAC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll, the Eagle women received 11 of 12 first-place votes and had a South-best 66 voting points. Saginaw Valley State (51 points) was picked second in the South, and Northwood (48 points, one first-place vote) third.

The voting was much closer in the North Division, where Michigan Tech (58 points), Grand Valley State (57) and Northern Michigan (52) all received four first-place votes.

Since joining the GLIAC in 1995-96, Ashland has won nine South Division championships (2004-06, 2011-14, 2016-17). In 2017, Ashland became the first GLIAC women's basketball program to win both four regular-season and four tournament championships in a six-year period.

Snyder was selected as the 2017-18 GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year following her 2016-17 GLIAC Player of the Year campaign. Last season, Snyder averaged 17.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.8 steals per game while shooting 51.6 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line. She enters 2017-18 with the following ranks in program history – second in steals (274), and third in points (1,570), field goals made (661) and rebounds (899).

Both Snyder and Daugherty landed on the 2017-18 preseason All-GLIAC South squad. In 2016-17, Daugherty averaged 15.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting 54.6 percent from the field, 37.8 percent from the 3-point line and 81.3 percent from the free-throw line. Coming into 2017-18, she ranks third all-time at Ashland in free-throw percentage (78.2), fourth in points (1,516), and fifth in field goals made (589) and field-goal percentage (52.1).

This is the first time Snyder has been named preseason conference Player of the Year, and the third time both Snyder and Daugherty have been preseason All-GLIAC South.

Ashland will play road exhibition games against NCAA Division I opponents on Sunday (Oct. 29) at 2 p.m. vs. Ohio State and Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. vs. Connecticut. The Eagles' 2017-18 regular season begins on Nov. 10-11 with two games at the G-MAC/GLIAC/GLVC Crossover in Cedarville, Ohio, against Ohio Dominican and Cedarville.
