As announced by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Monday (Feb. 12) morning, Ashland University senior forward Laina Snyder is the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week for the 12th time in her Eagle career and the second time in 2017-18.
Snyder had a strong all-around week for the No. 1-ranked Eagles in home wins over Lake Superior State on Thursday (Feb. 8) and Ferris State on Saturday (Feb. 10) - and moved closer to program history in the process. Snyder averaged 21.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 5.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game, while hitting 57.1 percent from the field, 2-of-3 from 3-point range and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Against the Lakers, Snyder became the second player in program history to go past 2,000 career points, and became the 32nd player in NCAA Division II women's basketball history to collect at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. Snyder now has 2,039 career points, just 46 away from tying Amber Rall (2,087) for the all-time program lead.
Snyder leads the GLIAC at 19.5 points per game, and is in the top 10 in the conference in field-goal percentage (fifth, 54.3), rebounds per game (fifth, 7.5) and steals per game (third, 2.8).
There have been 12 South Division Players of the Week in 2017-18, and Ashland players have earned nine of those awards – Snyder two, sophomore guard Jodi Johnson six and senior forward Andi Daugherty one.
Ashland is 24-0 overall and 16-0 in the GLIAC, and will go on its final regular-season road trip of the campaign beginning on Thursday (Feb. 15) at 8 p.m. at Grand Valley State (20-4, 13-3). The Eagles have won 61 straight games, tied for the sixth-longest stretch in NCAA history, regardless of gender or level.
