"The Seven" is a famous episode of Seinfeld, in which George Costanza wanted to name a future child "Seven" to honor New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle.
Seven also has become a significant number for Ashland University sophomore guard Jodi Johnson, who landed her seventh Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Week award on Monday (Feb. 26) morning.
Johnson, who has been named GLIAC South Player of the Week eight times in two seasons, came up with another strong all-around week to close out the 2017-18 regular season. In home wins over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (Feb. 22) and Northwood on Saturday (Feb. 24), Johnson averaged 22.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game, while hitting 60.0 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from 3-point range and 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.
In less than two full seasons, Johnson has 990 career points - 10 away from becoming the 20th player in program history to score 1,000 in a career.
Through the regular season, Johnson is the GLIAC's leading scorer at 19.5 points per game, is second in field-goal percentage at 62.3, first in 3-point field-goal percentage at 59.6, fourth in free-throw percentage at 85.4, fourth in assists per game at 3.9 and first in steals per game at 4.0.
Of the 14 GLIAC South Players of the Week in 2017-18, 10 were Eagles – Johnson seven, senior forward Laina Snyder two and senior forward Andi Daugherty one.
No. 1-ranked Ashland finished the regular season at 28-0 overall and 20-0 in the GLIAC. The Eagles, currently on a 65-game winning streak, will play host to a 2018 GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal game vs. Davenport on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at 5:30 p.m.
