At a banquet on the Ashland University campus on Friday (March 2) night prior to the start of the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Final Four, Eagle sophomore guard Jodi Johnson was named GLIAC Player of the Year, and AU Head Coach Robyn Fralick earned GLIAC Coach of the Year honors.
Johnson, who was named GLIAC South Player of the Week seven times in 2017-18, put up strong numbers across the board during the regular season. She was the GLIAC's leading scorer at 19.5 points per game, second in field-goal percentage at 62.3, first in 3-point field-goal percentage at 59.6, fourth in free-throw percentage at 85.4, fourth in assists per game at 3.9 and first in steals per game at 4.0.
The sophomore guard also has set a new Ashland single-season steals record with 113 through the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals.
This is Ashland's fourth GLIAC Player of the Year honor, along with Laina Snyder (2016-17) and current AU Associate Head Coach Kari (Daugherty) Pickens (2011-12 and 2012-13).
Fralick led the Eagles to a second consecutive undefeated regular season, and a third consecutive GLIAC regular-season title. In less than three full seasons, Fralick has amassed a record of 97-2 (.980) with an NCAA Division II national championship, a WBCA Division II National Coach of the Year award and now three straight GLIAC Coach of the Year honors.
Fralick has guided Ashland to a 66-game winning streak, the sixth-longest in NCAA basketball history, regardless of level or gender.
This is Ashland's fourth GLIAC Coach of the Year honor, along with Sue Ramsey in 2011-12.
Johnson also was named first-team All-GLIAC, along with senior forwards Andi Daugherty and Snyder. Daugherty and Snyder join Amber Rall (2005-07) as the program's only three-time first-team All-GLIAC choices, and they are the first players since Ashland joined the GLIAC for the 1995-96 season to be either first- or second-team All-GLIAC all four years of their career.
During the regular season, Daugherty averaged 14.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game, while hitting 54.4 percent from the field, 39.5 percent from 3-point range and 89.3 percent from the free-throw line. In the regular year, Snyder went for 19.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals per contest, and shot 52.8 percent from the floor and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.
Junior guard Maddie Dackin and sophomore forward Renee Stimpert garnered All-GLIAC second team recognition. In the regular season, Dackin went for 11.6 points per game and shot 50.5 percent from the field, 41.1 percent from 3-point range and 86.2 percent from the free-throw line, while Stimpert averaged 9.6 points, 6.6 assists and 2.9 steals per contest.
Four Eagles earned spots on the All-GLIAC Defensive Team – Dackin, Daugherty, Johnson and Snyder. Daugherty is the first player in program history to be on the All-GLIAC Defensive Team four times.
