Former Ashland University forward Laina Snyder is the Eagle athletic program's nominee for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
As announced by the NCAA on Thursday (July 12) afternoon, Snyder is one of 581 nominees across the country, the most in the history of the Woman of the Year program.
Snyder graduated Summa Cum Laude in May with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.92, and a degree in Business Management/Marketing/Entrepreneurship. She is the AU women's basketball program's all-time leader in points (2,295), rebounds (1,207), steals (372), field goals made (972) and games played (tied, 138), and also is in the career top five in scoring average (third, 16.6), free-throw percentage (fifth, 78.2) and blocked shots (fourth, 113).
Snyder is a three-time Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-American (first-team as a junior and senior, honorable mention as a sophomore), a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, a two-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner's Award recipient, and a three-time first-team All-GLIAC selection. She was the 2016-17 GLIAC Player of the Year, the 2017 NCAA Division II Elite Eight Most Outstanding Player, the 2016-17 Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) Midwest Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the 2016-17 GLIAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The NCAA Woman of the Year program honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female college athletes from all three divisions. The nominees will be paired down to 10 from each division, then three from each division, and the Committee on Women's Athletics then selects the winner from the nine finalists.
All 30 Woman of the Year honorees will be recognized, and the 2018 Woman of the Year announced, at an awards dinner at the Westin Indianapolis on Sunday, Oct. 28.
Snyder is one of 131 nominees from NCAA Division II.
