Success in Ashland University's women's basketball program isn't confined to the court.
The Eagle women finished the 2017-18 academic year in the No. 6 spot in the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25, released on Tuesday (July 31) morning. Ashland's team grade-point average in '17-18 was 3.699.
This is the 12th time Ashland has earned a spot on the WBCA Academic Top 25, also doing so in 2015-16 (T-14th), 2014-15 (T-seventh), 2013-14 (ninth), 2012-13 (11th), 2011-12 (18th), 2010-11 (T-17th), 2009-10 (fifth), 2008-09 (third), 2007-08 (15th), 2002-03 (15th) and 2001-02 (12th).
A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) earned by the total number of academic hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by the WBCA member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
In 2017-18, Ashland's women were 36-1 overall and 20-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles were the NCAA Division II runner-up, and winners of GLIAC regular-season, GLIAC Tournament and Midwest Regional tournament championships. In the last seven seasons, Ashland has two national titles, two national finalist finishes, and an overall record of 217-24 (.900).
