Junior forward Sara Loomis is enjoying her new starting role on Ashland University's women's basketball team.
That new role has allowed Loomis to get off to a fast start in 2018-19. It's also allowed her to be named on Monday (Nov. 26) as the latest Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Week. It is Loomis' first GLIAC South Division honor.
Loomis had a stat sheet-stuffing-type of weekend for the No. 2-ranked Eagles in their Thanksgiving Tournament at Kates Gymnasium, averaging 23.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game, and shooting 64.0 percent from the field, 72.7 percent from 3-point range and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.
Her 27 points on Saturday (Nov. 24) vs. Missouri S&T were a career high, as were her 17 rebounds on Sunday (Nov. 25) vs. Slippery Rock.
In her first five collegiate starts this season, Loomis is averaging 16.4 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game, while hitting 54.7 percent from the floor, 56.3 percent from 3-point range and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe. Going into conference play this week, Loomis leads the GLIAC in blocks per game, and is tied for first in rebounds per contest.
This is the second consecutive week an Ashland player has garnered GLIAC South Division Player of the Week honors, as junior guard/forward Jodi Johnson did so in Week 2.
Ashland (5-0) will open conference play on Thursday (Nov. 29) at 5:30 p.m. at Kates Gymnasium vs. Lake Superior State (3-2).
