Two days into the 2019-20 season, Ashland University's women's basketball team is scoring a lot of points and reaching impressive individual milestones.
On Saturday (Nov. 9) in Louisville, Ky., the No. 8-ranked Eagles defeated Ohio Dominican, 103-83, to improve to 2-0. In the process, senior forward Sara Loomis became the 23rd player in Ashland women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-career-point plateau.
Loomis finished Saturday with 19 points and 16 rebounds, giving her 1,002 career points. In two games to begin the new campaign, Loomis has posted 45 points and 28 boards.
To start the season, Ashland has scored 200 points in the first two games.
THE MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
- Ashland opened the game quickly, ending the first quarter with a 32-14 lead after scoring the game's first 11 points. The Eagles made 11-of-19 shots from the field in the game's first 10 minutes.
- The offensive pace slowed down in the second quarter, but Ashland boasted a 54-43 lead at the break. Loomis had a double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds) in just 14 minutes of first-half action.
- Loomis scored her 1,000th career point just inside of the five-minute mark of the third quarter, giving the Eagles a 71-54 lead. Ashland's advantage was 78-63 going into the fourth stanza.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
- Sophomore guard Hallie Heidemann scored a career-high 25 points off the bench in the victory, connecting on 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-11 from 3-point range. Heidemann also grabbed seven rebounds.
- Five Eagles scored in double figures on Saturday – Heidemann, Loomis, senior guard/forward Sarah Hart (17 points), senior guard Jodi Johnson (13) and junior forward Karlee Pireu (11). Johnson now has 1,696 career points, moving past Tammi Scott for fourth place on AU's all-time scoring list.
- Senior guard Renee Stimpert dished off nine assists against the Panthers, and has started the season with 26 helpers in the first two games.
- Ashland had 25 assists on 39 made field goals, and had a 49-41 rebounding advantage.
