Ashland University women's golfer Holly James (Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) received an NCAA Elite 89 Award on Tuesday night (May 14) on the eve of the NCAA Division II Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.

At each of the NCAA's championships, one participating student-athlete receives an Elite 89 Award. That citation goes to the student-athlete at the championships with the highest cumulative grade point average. The student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and competed for two seasons. He or she must be a member of the traveling team.

James is the first AU student-athlete to receive this award. The senior completed her career with a 4.00 grade point average. She is a management information systems major.

James is a member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team and has been nominated as a Capital One Academic All-America. The senior has been one of the key players in AU's march to the NCAA Championships. The first round of play will be held on Wednesday (May 15). This is the second time in school history Ashland has reached the NCAA Championships.

The head coach of the Eagles is Pam Leonard.
