Sunday (April 24) marked the final round of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship play for Ashland University senior Ali Green.
And what a round it was.
Green fired a 5-under 67 in the third and final round of the 2016 GLIAC Championship on Sunday, then defeated Findlay's Kasey Petty in a one-hole playoff to earn her first conference title. Green is the Eagles' second GLIAC medalist, and the program's first since Erin Misheff in 2011.
How good was Green's round of 67? Not only did it set a new GLIAC Championship single-round record, but it also was her lowest round as an Eagle, it was the best round of any GLIAC golfer over the weekend by three shots, it was Green's best GLIAC Championship round by six strokes and it was the best individual round in the Eagle program since the start of the 2000-01 campaign.
Green ends her conference career with four top-10 placements. She was league runner-up as a freshman in 2013.
Green finished the weekend at 73-75-67—215, helping Ashland to a third-place team finish at 310-315-305—930. The Eagles have finished fifth or better at the GLIAC Championship every year since 2005.
Host Grand Valley State won the conference's team crown at 292-295-300—887, while Findlay was the runner-up at 303-311-308—922.
Junior Kaitlin Neumann finished 10th individually after a three-day showing of 75-76-81—232. That is Neumann's third top-10 GLIAC finish in three seasons.
Rounding out the AU weekend effort were freshman Monica Torda (82-81-79—242) and junior Emily Jereb (80-83-79—242), both tied for 18th individually, and freshman Morgan Eib (88-87-80—255), who finished tied for 35th.
After the tournament's conclusion, Green and Neumann were named first-team All-GLIAC, while Jereb earned honorable mention.
Ashland, which was sixth in the latest East Super Region rankings on Thursday (April 21), will find out if it earned a spot in the NCAA Division II postseason on Monday (April 25). Twelve teams and six individuals not on those teams will compete at the East Super Regional, May 2-4 at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill.
