CANTON, Ohio – Ashland University senior Kaitlin Neumann played herself into contention for a spot at NCAA Division II nationals after an even-par round of 72 on Tuesday (May 9) in Day 2 of the Super Region 1 tournament at Glenmoor Country Club.
Neumann carded her second-best round of 2016-17 to move into a tie for ninth place individually at 80-72—152. More importantly, however, Neumann is just three shots back of a spot in the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships, May 17-20 at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
"I was hitting fairways and greens today," Neumann said, "and yesterday, I did not. My putting has been strong both days. Honestly, I just went out and hit shot by shot, because you don't know what you're going to get until you're out there."
The low three teams and the low three individuals not on those teams from each of the four super regionals will advance to the national championships.
Neumann's day included three birdies, and she shot 1-under in the final 12 holes of the day.
As a team, the Eagles are in eighth place in the 12-team field with a two-day total of 330-318—648. Indianapolis (290-293—583) leads the field, followed by Grand Valley State (300-307—607) and Missouri-St. Louis (312-298—610).
"We all wanted to play better," Neumann said. "Yesterday (Monday) was a struggle for most of us."
Freshman Anna Schatschneider fired a career-best-tying round of 78 on Tuesday, including three birdies, and is tied for 32nd individually for the tournament. Redshirt freshman Krystal Hu had an 81 on Day 2, and is tied for 37th.
Sophomores Morgan Eib and Monica Torda had matching 87s on Tuesday, leaving Eib 56th and Torda tied for 57th.
