On Thursday (June 22) morning, Ashland University Director of Athletics Al King announced the hire of Andrew Bolinger as Eagle women's golf head coach.
Bolinger most recently was the second assistant golf professional at Travis Pointe Country Club in Ann Arbor, Mich., for more than two years, and also was the club's third assistant pro for a year.
"We are giving Andrew the chance to pursue his dream of becoming a college golf coach," King said. "This is something he's wanted to try, and we were intrigued by his resume and background. Andrew has a nice background of experience for someone his age. He's highly thought of as someone who can teach the game, and he's had opportunities to go and work as a club pro in several parts of the country.
"I believe our team can benefit from that aspect, his ability to teach."
Said Bolinger, "I would like to thank Al King and Ashland University for giving me the opportunity to become the head women's golf coach. I am eager to work for an established program and build upon the foundation. I believe with the incoming class and those that are returning, this program has the ability to flourish with the correct work ethic, dedication and determination.
"Ultimately, I want to leave a lasting impression in a student-athlete's life, regardless of skill or success."
Bolinger is familiar with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, having played on the men's golf team at Tiffin. He was a member of the GLIAC USA Athletes International (USAAI) team that played at St. Andrews, Scotland, in August of 2013, and he had four top-10 placements in nine starts for the Dragons in 2012-13.
"It's not that long ago that Andrew was playing college golf," said King. "He understands the ups and downs of the game and the pressure of collegiate golf. I think he's going to be able to relate to our student-athletes and get the most out of them.
"Like Logan Cooke with our men's team, he brings a high level of enthusiasm, desire and determination to this position. There are no substitutes for those attributes."
As a prep golfer at Margaretta High School in Castalia, Ohio, Bolinger was the 2007 Northwest Ohio Division II Player of the Year.
