Ashland Women Win Season-Opening Corbett Classic

Ashland University's women's golf team's opening two rounds of 2017-18 earned all the checkmarks.

Team win in a 23-squad tournament? Check.

One of the best team rounds in program history? Check.

Three young golfers finishing in the top 12 in a 120-player field? Check.

First-year head coach Andrew Bolinger 1-for-1 in coaching victories? Check.

It was a banner day for the Eagle women on the second and final day of the Michael Corbett Fall Classic in Erie, Pa., on Monday (Sept. 11), as Ashland finished with a tournament-best round of 304 en route to a first-place finish. That one-day score is tied for the sixth-best in program history.

The Eagles ended 319-304—623, six shots ahead of second-place Kutztown (311-318—629). Franklin Pierce (319-314—633) took third.

Sophomore Krystal Hu moved up eight spots to take fourth place individually at 79-73—152. Her second-round 73 was two shots shy of her AU low score.

Freshman Hannah Lemons finished in a tie for seventh in her first collegiate action (76-78—154), and another rookie, Sophie Hemleben, went from tied for 34th after Sunday (Sept. 10) to tied for 12th (83-74—157).

Junior Monica Torda finished in a tie for 21st (82-79—161), while sophomore Anna Schatschneider was tied for 26th (82-81—163).

Monday marked Ashland's first tournament win since Oct. 4, 2015, in its own Ashland University Invitational.

UP NEXT: A quick turnaround for the Bulldog Fall Preview on Friday (Sept. 15) and Saturday (Sept. 16) at Katke Golf Club in Big Rapids, Mich.
