Following a team championship and a third-place finish to begin the 2017 fall season, Ashland University's women's golf team seeks another top showing on Saturday (Sept. 23) and Sunday (Sept. 24) at the Saginaw Valley State Fall Invitational.

"We've started out hot, that's for sure," said Ashland head coach Andrew Bolinger.

The Eagles' team average is 312.3, and while it is early in 2017-18, that average is almost eight shots ahead of the 2016-17 season-long average (320.2).

Leading the way for Ashland through the first four rounds of the season is freshman Hannah Lemons, who is averaging a score of 77. She tied for seventh at the Michael Corbett Fall Classic, then followed that with a tie for 11th at the Bulldog Fall Preview.

"Hannah's a very steady player," Bolinger said. "We can always count on her shooting in the mid-70s, and that's a good start."

Right behind Lemons are sophomore Krystal Hu, whose average of 77.8 is on pace with last season, and junior Monica Torda, whose 78.3 average is nearly five shots per round better than a season ago, and three shots per round better than the first two tournaments of 2016.

"Krystal definitely had a great spring first semester last year," Bolinger said. "She's looking to build. She's been practicing very hard this past week, and I have a lot of expectations going into Saginaw Valley for her and for the team.

"Monica's fall is looking awesome. She shot a 74 (second round at Ferris State), her best round in college, and that's something to build on."

Ashland's starting lineup includes freshman Sophie Hemleben (79.5 average) and sophomore Anna Schatschneider (82.8).

The Eagles will play at SVSU this weekend, then conclude the fall season at another Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival, Grand Valley State, and a former GLIAC foe, Findlay.

"The course (at SVSU) is more like Ashland Golf Club, so that's a great thing to have," Bolinger said. "We're looking to compete and get that victory there. There's a lot of good competition within the conference."
