On a day where Ashland University's women's golf team paced the nine-team field on Day 1 of the Saginaw Valley State Fall Invitational, sophomore Krystal Hu's round stood out the most.
Saturday (Sept. 23) at Bay City Country Club in Bay City, Mich., Hu fired an opening-round four-under-par 68 to lift the Eagles to a team total of 298. Hu leads after the first day of play by two shots over Ferris State's Baylee Thompson (70).
Hu's round is tied for the second-best in Ashland program history, behind only Ali Green's 67 in the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
As a team, Ashland's 298 also is tied for the second-best mark in Eagle history, trailing just the 290 put up at the Pioneer Invitational during the 2014-15 campaign.
Freshman Hannah Lemons carded a 75 to sit tied for ninth after 18 holes, followed by freshman Sophie Hemleben (77), junior Monica Torda (78) and sophomore Logan Pottorf (89).
In the team standings, Ashland leads Northwood (305) by seven strokes. Wayne State (307) is in third place.
