In preparation for the 2018 spring championship season, Ashland University's women's golf team has put together impressive scores, both team and individually, so far during the fall of 2017.
The Eagle women will play the fourth of five fall tournaments on Saturday (Sept. 30) and Sunday (Oct. 1) at the 9th Annual Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invitational at The Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Mich., in the search of more low rounds.
"It's more of a conference tournament. Grand Valley's the host, and they are going to be the favorite," said Ashland head coach Andrew Bolinger. "Northern Michigan's there, and Wayne State will be there, as well, so it's a good field. It's a great place to play a tournament. Tough course.
"It's going to be a great test for the girls."
Ashland has finished in the top third of all three fall tourneys so far this season, including a win at the Michael Corbett Fall Classic in Erie, Pa., to open the campaign. The Eagles' 611 team total in two rounds at the Saginaw Valley State Fall Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 23) and Sunday (Sept. 24) was a season low, and is the fourth-lowest mark at a 36-hole tournament since the program began.
Their first-round 298 at SVSU is tied for the second-best round in program history.
"The girls are improving daily, and they're working at it consistently," Bolinger said. "It's great to see as a coach. Their work ethic is top-notch."
Sophomore Krystal Hu lowered her season average to 75 after six rounds thanks in large part to a first-round 68 at SVSU, tied for the second-best individual round in Ashland women's golf history. She won the tournament with a 68-71—139, and in nine collegiate tournaments, has two medalists and five finishes in the top 10.
"Last week, she was impressive," Bolinger said. "On the last day, she hit 17 greens and shot one-under, and on the first day, she shot four-under. Her ability to shoot low and win tournaments is definitely there, and she showed it last week."
Freshman Hannah Lemons has finished in the top 11 in all of her first three tourneys at AU, is averaging 76.8 per round and had a low of 75 in the first round at SVSU. Junior Monica Torda continues to whittle her average down, now at 77.8, while freshman Sophie Hemleben's average sits at 80.5.
