Beating the impending rain storm and finishing the first 18 holes of the Ashland Invitational on Saturday (April 14) at Ashland Golf Club, Ashland University's women's golf team was tied for seventh in the 15-team field after Day 1.
"Great day. It was beautiful," said Ashland head coach Andrew Bolinger. "The course is in great condition. Going out there at 9 o'clock helped everybody get finished before the rains came."
The Eagles ended the day with a team score of 327. Nationally-ranked Grand Valley State is the team leader at 293, followed by Tiffin (312) and Wittenberg (323).
Ashland was led by sophomore Krystal Hu, who landed in a tie for eighth place individually following a 5-over-par round of 77.
"She stayed around par most of the day," said Bolinger. "Hopefully she can come back tomorrow and post a low score."
Next for the Eagles was junior Monica Torda, who is tied for 29th at 81.
"Fortunately, she was able to finish strong, like last week," Bolinger said.
Rounding out the AU team effort were freshmen Hannah Lemons (tied for 39th, 83) and Sophie Hemleben (tied for 65th, 86), and sophomore Logan Pottorf (79th, 90).
"It was tough out there," Bolinger said. "Going out there and posting a score is difficult. Ashland is one of the toughest courses we will play."
UP NEXT: Day 2 of the Ashland Invitational on Sunday (April 15)…maybe.
"That's a huge question mark right now," Bolinger said, aware of the rainy forecast. "If it rains a lot, then tomorrow will be canceled and today's scores will be official."
