Beginning NCAA Division II postseason play for the ninth consecutive season on Monday (May 7), Ashland University's women's golf team fired a team score of 309 on Day 1 of the East Regional at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
On the par-72 course on Monday, the Eagles' round was their best since the first 18 holes of the Saginaw Valley State Fall Invitational on Sept. 23, and Ashland's fourth-best round overall in 2017-18. The tally was good for a tie for fifth place.
Grand Valley State leads the team standings after the first day at 289, followed by Indianapolis (292) and Northern Michigan (301). The low three teams, and the low three individuals not on those teams, in each region will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division II Championships, May 16-19 at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
Sophomore Krystal Hu led Ashland's effort on Monday, placing in a tie for sixth place individually with a 2-over-par round of 74. Hu was 2-under through eight holes, recorded four birdies (holes No. 1, 9, 12 and 13), and finished with her 18th straight round of better than 80.
Freshman Hannah Lemons was right behind Hu with a first-day 75, well below her 2017-18 average round of 78.60 coming in, and good for a tie for 13th. Lemons birdied holes No. 11 and 14, was 1-over through 12 holes, and is averaging 75.67 in her last three rounds.
Another Eagle well below her season scoring average on Monday was freshman Sophie Hemleben, who is tied for 32nd after a first-day 79. Averaging 82.20 per round entering the regional, Hemleben birdied No. 16 and was 3-over-par through 10 holes.
Junior Monica Torda ended the day tied for 46th with a round of 81, including birdies on holes No. 1 and 11, and sophomore Logan Pottorf fired an 89, two shots below her season average.
