In her first NCAA Division II Championships round of golf on Wednesday (May 16) at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas, Ashland University sophomore Krystal Hu fired a 7-over-par 79.

Hu birdied the first hole of the day en route to a 2-over front nine, and she birdied at No. 13 and 18 despite a 5-over back nine. She finished the first day at 3-over on par-3s, 1-over on par-4s and 3-over on par-5s.

On the individual leaderboard after the first 18 holes, Hu is in a tie for 52nd place.

Hu's 79 is tied for the sixth-best opening round at nationals for an Ashland women's golfer. Only Erin Misheff (75 in 2011, 77 in 2012), Ali Green (76 in 2016, 77 in 2015) and Madison Musick (77 in 2015) have started nationals better.
