After nine tournaments in 2018-19, including three this spring, Ashland University's women's golf team will play in the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Friday-Sunday (April 19-21) at Stoatin Brae Golf Course at Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort in Augusta, Mich.
Without sophomore Hannah Lemons, who averaged 78.92 per round in the first seven tournaments but whose spring has been injury-filled, fellow sophomore Sophie Hemleben has stepped into the No. 1 spot. Hemleben's season average is 79.29.
"Losing Hannah is obviously very difficult for us," said Ashland head coach Dennis North. "Sophie has really thrived in that 1 position. She has the potential to be a really, really good player."
Ashland's two upperclassmen in the lineup are senior Monica Torda (84.65 average) and junior Logan Pottorf (88.69). The Eagles' lineup also includes two freshmen – Sophia Lowe (89.00) and Cece Dillon (91.58).
"The fact that they can get some experience right now is only going to help us for next year," North said.
The GLIAC Championships will feature a different format this year – two rounds, then on Sunday, the top four teams compete in head-to-head medal play in the semifinals in the morning, and the two semifinal winners will do head-to-head medal play in the finals in the afternoon.
Ashland placed fourth or higher at GLIACs each year from 2008-09 to 2016-17. In 2018, the Eagles finished seventh.
