Ashland University's lacrosse team lost at home on Sunday (March 24) to Davenport in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Panthers outscored the Eagles, 20-8. Ashland moves to 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the GLIAC, while Davenport is now above .500 overall at 5-4, and right at .500 at 2-2 in the GLIAC.
"We had a lot of unforced errors, turnovers, especially in the midfield. In games like this, when we are more evenly matched, is where it can be won or lost," said Ashland's assistant lacrosse coach Becky Smith. "We weren't capitalizing on mistakes that they made in the midfield, or on good defensive stops and then clearing it out."
Junior Renee Ruppert led the Eagles offensive attack throughout the game, scoring four goals on six shots. Junior Sofia Michael tallied two goals and an assist. Also chipping in offensively was senior Haley Abraszek, who added a goal, and freshman Cora Wilson with one goal and one assist.
Ashland was narrowly outshot in the contest, 27-23, but the Panthers were able to convert on a higher percentage of their attempts.
In net, the Eagles started freshman Corynn Schneider, who made five saves.
Davenport had the narrow advantage in draw controls, 17-13. And it was a balanced attack for Davenport as five players scored three or more goals.
The Eagles will not play again until April 5, and they'll use that time to prepare for more GLIAC competition.
"At this point in the year, there are some aches and pains, so the practices are going to be shorter, and everyone is getting taken care of," said Smith. "On the other side, we'll be running hard and making sure our conditioning stays up and working on the stuff that we continuously make mistakes on."
The Eagles' next game will be at home against McKendree on April 5 at 4 p.m.
