Michael Garners First-Team All-GLIAC Honor

Ashland University lacrosse junior Sofia Michael was named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team on Thursday (May 2) night, becoming the program's first all-conference player in history.

Michael scored 60 goals in 16 games for the Eagles to lead the GLIAC in goal-scoring. She added seven assists to that total, to finish with 67 points overall, and put 84.2 percent of her shots on target. Michael also handled draw-control responsibilities for the Eagles, winning a total of 126 draw controls. Her efforts helped Ashland to five wins in its first season as a lacrosse program.

Michael's top performance of the season came on April 10 against Lewis. She found the net 8 times, leading AU to a 12-11 victory. Michael also had two seven-goal efforts (Feb. 23 and April 28), both victories for Ashland.

The recognition should come as no surprise for those following Michael's career accomplishments. Before coming to Ashland, Michael was named the Betty Jo Graber Award winner for being the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2017-18.

Michael tallied 51 goals and 29 assists in her freshman campaign at Anne Arundel. She also put 96 percent of her shots on target in that season. In her sophomore season, Michael increased her goal count to 56 on the year and assisted on 25 goals. She completed her junior college career with 161 total points in two seasons.
