Ashland University senior Jacob Southwick (Otsego, Ohio/Bowling Green) won the gold medal on Saturday (Jan. 7) in the 285-pound weight class at the Lake Erie Storm Open.
In the title bout, Southwick defeated West Virginia's Philip Mandzik, 1-0. Earlier in the day, Southwick downed Notre Dame College's Dan Demick, 5-0 and stopped Orry Elor of Ohio State, 4-1 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Southwick won by medical forfeit over David Box of Eastern Michigan.
Southwick was one of 11 AU wrestlers to make the trip to Painesville, Ohio. The Eagles had wrestled on Friday night at Kates Gymnasium against Gannon.
Ashland is back in action this coming Sunday (Jan. 15) when it hosts the Wendy's Mid-Atlantic Duals.
