Ashland University junior Bryson Hall was named the GLIAC's Most Outstanding Wrestler for 2014. That award was presented to Hall on Saturday (Feb. 1) at Findlay where the Eagles placed second at the GLIAC Championships.
Hall is ranked second in the country at 184 pounds and he entered Saturday's action with a 14-1 record. On Saturday he won via forfeit and by techincal fall and a decision.
The Eagles won their first two matches at Findlay, stopping Tiffin, 38-7 and Findlay, 28-10. That put the Eagles into the title bout with Lake Erie. That was a tense affair that went to the Storm, 19-18.
Hall was one of three AU wrestlers to attain first team all-conference honors. He was joined by sophomore Michael Labry at 133 pounds and redshirt freshman Brent Fickel at 149 pounds. On Saturday, Labry was 3-0 with a technical fall, a pin and a win by decision. Fickel was 2-0 with a decision and a pin.
AU's All-GLIAC second team honorees included Bobby Mason at 141 pounds, Luke Cramer at 174 pounds and Joe Brandt at 197 pounds.
One of the top matches of the championships came in the AU-LEC confrontation where Brandt squared off against Evan Rosborough. Rosborough won by decision, 4-3. The Lake Erie wrestler is the 2014 GLIAC Newcomer of the Year.
Lake Erie's Kevin Hoogenboom is the 2014 GLIAC Coach of the Year.
In addition to Hall, Brandt is ranked sixth in the nation and Labry is ranked third. As a team, the Eagles are tied for 17th in the latest NCAA Division II poll.
