Ashland University junior Michael Labry now is a repeat champion at the Midwest Classic, having won the 133-pound title Sunday (Dec. 14) in the 36th edition of the Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.
Labry went 5-0 on the weekend, finishing off the 133 title with a 7-6 decision over Indianapolis' Nick Crume. Labry recorded two pins and a major decision at the Classic.
Sophomore 174-pounder Luke Cramer finished in second place Sunday, finishing the weekend 3-1 and losing in the first-place match to Terrence Zaleski of UNC-Pembroke, 6-4. Cramer won three straight decisions following a first-round bye to get to the title match.
Sophomore Brandon O'Neill worked his way through the consolation bracket and finished third at 197 pounds. O'Neill was 6-1 on the weekend, recording three major decisions along the way. He won four straight consolation matches, including the third-place match against Lake Erie's Evan Rosborough, 3-0.
Junior Kurt Schaefer was Ashland's fourth and final placer, finishing eighth at 184 pounds. He went 4-3 at the Classic, including two wins by pin.
The Eagles finished ninth as a team, posting 68.5 points. Maryville won the team title with 127.5 points, followed by McKendree (121), Western State (102), Shorter (85.5), Upper Iowa (83), Tiffin (78), UNC-Pembroke (77) and Newberry (73).
Ashland will return to the mats on Jan. 3 in its Wendy's Mid-Atlantic Duals.
