Six Ashland University wrestlers have earned spots in the latest NCAA Division II Super Region II rankings heading into 2015.
Junior Michael Labry is the top-ranked wrestler in the region at 133 pounds. Labry is 20-1 with four pins in 2014-15.
Three Eagle sophomores are ranked second at their respective weights – Brent Fickel at 149, Luke Cramer at 174 and Brandon O'Neill at 197. Fickel is 9-3 with two pins, Cramer is 8-4 and O'Neill is 14-3 with a pin.
Both sophomore Ty Davis (141) and junior Kurt Schaefer (184) are ranked fifth in the region. Davis is 9-6, and Schaefer is 16-7 with five pins.
As a team, Ashland is ranked sixth in the region. Shorter is the top-ranked team, followed by UNC-Pembroke, Newberry, Tiffin and Findlay.
The Eagles will return to the mats Saturday (Jan. 3) for the annual Wendy's Mid-Atlantic Duals. Saturday's schedule is as follows:
- 9-10:45 a.m. - Ashland vs. West Liberty and Olivet vs. East Stroudsburg
- 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. - Ashland vs. East Stroudsburg and Olivet vs. West Liberty
- 1-2:45 p.m. - Ashland vs. Olivet and East Stroudsburg vs. Tiffin
